Lesson 9: Drawing the Step Flange in Ortho, Iso and 3d

Introduction

 

In lesson 9 you will be drawing the step flange. This part is found in machinery where there are bearings and shafts and where seals are used to keep oil and grease in and dirt and water out. The steps of the flange often are used to locate not only a seal but a gear or sprocket.

This is a fairly simple model to draw in ortho, iso and in 3d. There are certain strategies working in the Z axis for locating areas to extrude, move and subtract. You will be challenged by these strategies. Also in the orthographic view we are using a sectional view to illustrate the side view, which is also the front view with circular models.

Its benefit is a clear understanding of what the part looks like internally. In this lesson we will be introducing hatch marks that are used to illustrate the cut away area of a sectional; as if the model had been cut in half.

Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson you should be able to:

1. Draw the orthographic views of the Step Flange and dimension the model.
2. Identify the isometric angles used to create isometric views (30, 90 and 150 degrees)
3. Scale down the orthographic view and create an Isometric view.
4. Adjust the dimscale overall and linear to reflect full scale dimensions in the ortho/iso drawing.
5. Create the 3d model of the Step Flange from the top orthographic view.
6. Working with colors for visualization enhancement.
7. Maintain approximate proportions using "boxing in" also called the "Glass box Technique"
8. Create and locate the accurate use of center lines in orthographic drawings.
9. Create a region and use the hatch command to create the machine marks of a saw therefore illustrating a sectional view.

Instruction

The 9th model you will be drawing is called the Step Flange and it is a model where only the front and top view are necessary to completely illustrate the model. necessary to illustrate its attributes.

The illustration of the Switch bracket isometrically involves one circle, but it has several non isometric lines and this requires creating regions from certain parts of the orthographic models.

Insert your Lesson 8 media disk into your CD drive and begin listening to the avi file: lesson 9a. You can open up both software programs: ACAD and your media player at the same time and toggle back and forth between screens, and be able to draw and listen simultaneously. Below is an example of what your completed drawing should look like.

Pay attention to details so you can obtain all your points for this assignment. It is always better to get it right the first time, especially when you have what the finished product should look like.

The next part of Lesson 9b you will be creating the Isometric view of the Step Flange.This is a challenging object to do Isometrically, because you need to create a series of construction lines on the Z-axis to locate the steps by the use of ellipses.

The following is what your completed assignment should look like when completed.You will also illustrate the half scale orthographic/sectional view within this illustration.Notice the straight line rendering used to illustrate the hole of this part.

Please Insert the Media Disk labeled Lesson 9 into your CD drive of your computer and begin listening how to draw the 3d model of the Step Flange. The lesson avi is titled Lesson 9c and below is an example of a completed accurate model of the Step Flange. You will submit your drawing in South East Isometric. This is what your completed 3d assignment looks like.
